Understanding Pesticide Dosing Calculations

Pesticide dosing converts a product's label rate — the amount per acre or hectare printed on the label — into how much product goes in each sprayer tank. The standard university-extension method is to find how many acres one tank covers (tank capacity divided by spray volume), then multiply by the label rate. Getting the dose right matters both ways: too little risks poor control and resistance, while too much wastes product, can injure the crop, and may break the law. The product label is always the final authority on rates, timing, and safety.

Pesticide Dosing FAQ

Label rate is the amount of product per acre (oz/acre, lb/acre). Spray volume is how much carrier (water) you apply per acre (GPA). You can change spray volume without changing label rate — you are just adjusting concentration, not dose.

Spray volume depends on the target. Contact herbicides need thorough coverage (15-25 GPA). Systemic products need less volume (5-10 GPA). Insecticides for dense canopy may need 100+ GPA for penetration.

Enter the rate in its metric unit and set your field area to hectares and tank to liters — the calculator reports the product per tank in mL, L, g, or kg to match. It also handles mixed units (e.g. a per-hectare rate on an acre field).

Check the label — many products require surfactants for uptake, crop oils for penetration, or drift retardants (typically 0.25-1% v/v). Adjuvants go in near the end of the mixing order, after the pesticides and before topping off with water.
