Pesticide application involves calculating how much product to add per tank based on the label rate (oz/acre or lb/acre), your spray volume (gallons per acre), and tank size. Proper calibration ensures you apply the correct dose—too little risks poor control, too much wastes product and may cause crop damage.

Product per Tank = (Label Rate × Spray Volume × Tank Size) ÷ (Spray Volume × Coverage per Tank)Applying the correct rate is legally required. Under-dosing or over-dosing violates EPA regulations.

Label rate is the amount of product per acre (oz/acre, lb/acre). Spray volume is how much carrier (water) you apply per acre (GPA). You can change spray volume without changing label rate—just adjust concentration.
Spray volume depends on the target. Contact herbicides need thorough coverage (15-25 GPA). Systemic products need less volume (5-10 GPA). Insecticides for dense canopy may need 100+ GPA for penetration.
GPA (gallons per acre) is your application volume. Calibrate by measuring output: GPA = (GPM × 5,940) ÷ (MPH × Nozzle Spacing in inches). Verify by marking an acre and measuring water used.
Check the label. Many products require surfactants for uptake, crop oils for penetration, or drift retardants. Adjuvant rates are typically 0.25-1% v/v (1-4 qt per 100 gallons).
