A grid emission factor represents the average amount of CO₂ released per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated in a specific region. It varies widely: California (0.23 kg/kWh) uses more renewables while the Midwest (0.45 kg/kWh) relies more on coal. Using your regional factor gives accurate emissions estimates.

Energy consumption depends on the appliance's power rating (watts) and usage time. A refrigerator runs 24/7 at low power, while a dryer runs briefly at high power. Heating and cooling appliances (dryers, AC, water heaters) typically consume the most energy because converting electricity to heat requires significant power.

Focus on high-impact changes: 1) Upgrade old appliances to ENERGY STAR models, 2) Reduce usage of heating appliances, 3) Use appliances during off-peak hours, 4) Unplug devices when not in use, 5) Consider your region's renewable energy options. Small changes in high-use appliances have the biggest impact.
