Calculate Your Water Footprint

Do you know how much water you really use? Beyond your tap water, there's a hidden 'virtual water' footprint in everything you eat, wear, and buy. Our water footprint calculator measures your complete water consumption—both direct and indirect—and helps you discover where the biggest savings opportunities lie.

What is a Water Footprint?

Your water footprint is the total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services you consume. It includes three types: blue water (surface and groundwater), green water (rainwater stored in soil), and grey water (polluted water). The average American uses about 1,800 gallons per day when virtual water is included—far more than the 80-100 gallons from direct household use.

Water Footprint Formula

Total = Indoor (Direct) + Outdoor (Direct) + Virtual (Food, Goods)

Frequently Asked Questions

Virtual water (also called embedded or hidden water) is the water used to produce everything you consume. For example, 1 lb of beef requires about 1,800 gallons of water; a cotton t-shirt needs 700 gallons; a cup of coffee requires 37 gallons. This virtual water typically accounts for 95% of your total water footprint.

Direct household use averages 80-100 gallons per day per person. However, when you include virtual water from food and products, the average American water footprint is about 1,800 gallons per day—double the global average of 900 gallons.

Animal products have the highest water footprints: beef (1,800 gal/lb), pork (720 gal/lb), chicken (470 gal/lb). High-water plant foods include nuts, coffee, and chocolate. Vegetables and grains have the lowest footprints. Shifting just one meal per week from beef to vegetables can save thousands of gallons annually.

Yes, but it's just part of the picture. A 10-minute shower uses about 25 gallons (standard showerhead) or 15 gallons (low-flow). Reducing to 5 minutes saves 12.5+ gallons daily. However, dietary choices often have 10-20x more impact on your total water footprint than direct water use changes.

An efficient personal target is around 1,200 gallons per day total (including virtual water). This involves water-efficient fixtures, mindful outdoor watering, a lower-meat diet, and conscious consumption. Getting below 1,000 gallons/day is excellent and sustainable at global scale.

The biggest impacts come from: 1) Reducing meat consumption (especially beef), 2) Minimizing food waste (30-40% of food is wasted), 3) Buying less clothing and goods, 4) Installing low-flow fixtures, and 5) Reducing or eliminating lawn irrigation. A plant-based day per week and fixing leaks are easy starts.
