Data storage is measured in bytes and its multiples. Two systems exist: binary (1 KB = 1,024 bytes, used by operating systems — formally called KiB) and decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, used by drive manufacturers). This calculator uses the binary convention (1,024), which is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in your OS. Knowing both is essential for files, storage devices, and data transfer. The binary prefixes are defined by the IEC (standard IEC 80000-13): a kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes and a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,024 KiB, distinct from the decimal SI kilobyte (1,000 bytes) that drive makers use.

Drive manufacturers use decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) while computers use binary (1 KB = 1,024 bytes). This difference compounds with larger units, so a '1 TB' drive appears as about 931 GB in your computer.
MB (capital B) means megabytes (storage). Mb (lowercase b) means megabits (data transfer). There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mb/s internet is about 12.5 MB/s actual download speed.
KB (kilobyte) = 1000 bytes (decimal). KiB (kibibyte) = 1024 bytes (binary). The difference grows larger with bigger units.
In binary (what your OS shows): 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes, 1 GB = 1,024 MB, 1 TB = 1,024 GB, 1 PB = 1,024 TB. Also useful: 8 bits = 1 byte, so a 100 Mbps connection is about 12.5 MB/s.
