Yes — the main character count includes spaces. We also show a separate count without spaces, since some limits and style guides exclude them.
Reading time equals word count divided by reading speed. We default to about 230 words per minute (a typical adult silent-reading pace) and let you switch between slow, average, and fast.
A standard double-spaced page is roughly 250–300 words, so a 5-page essay is about 1,250–1,500 words. Always check your specific assignment guidelines.
