Typing speed is measured in Words Per Minute (WPM), where a 'word' is standardized as 5 characters including spaces. Net WPM accounts for errors, giving you a more accurate measure of effective typing speed.
WPM Formula
WPM = (Total Characters ÷ 5) ÷ Time (minutes)Many jobs require minimum typing speeds. Data entry typically needs 50+ WPM, transcription 60+ WPM.
Faster typing means less time on emails, documents, and communication.
Regular testing helps you monitor improvement over time.
Under 30 WPM - Still learning keyboard layout and basic technique.
30-50 WPM - Sufficient for casual computer use and basic office work.
50-70 WPM - Good for most professional typing jobs.
70+ WPM - Expert level, suitable for transcription and court reporting.
40 WPM is average for adults. 60+ WPM is considered proficient. Professional typists often exceed 80 WPM. The fastest typists can reach 150+ WPM.
WPM (Words Per Minute) uses a standardized word length of 5 characters. CPM (Characters Per Minute) counts actual characters. CPM ÷ 5 = WPM.
Net WPM subtracts errors from your gross WPM. It's calculated as: Net WPM = Gross WPM - (Errors ÷ Time in minutes). This gives a more accurate measure of effective typing speed.
