The IRS standard mileage rate is the per-mile rate set by the Internal Revenue Service for calculating the deductible costs of operating a vehicle for business, medical, charitable, or moving purposes. For 2025, the business rate is 70 cents per mile—the highest it has ever been. These rates are updated annually and reflect the average costs of operating a vehicle including gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation.

For 2025, the IRS standard mileage rates are: 70 cents per mile for business use, 21 cents per mile for medical or moving purposes (military only), and 14 cents per mile for charitable driving. These rates increased from 2024 due to rising fuel and vehicle operating costs.
You can generally choose between the standard mileage rate or actual vehicle expenses (gas, oil, repairs, insurance, depreciation). However, you must use the standard mileage rate in the first year you use the car for business to preserve the option. Some vehicles (like those used for hire) don't qualify for the standard rate.
The IRS requires contemporaneous records including: the date of each trip, destination and business purpose, starting and ending odometer readings, and total miles driven. Many people use mileage tracking apps to maintain accurate records throughout the year.
The charitable mileage rate (14 cents per mile) is set by statute and doesn't change annually like business and medical rates. It's intentionally lower because it's meant to cover only out-of-pocket costs like gas, not wear and tear on the vehicle—your charitable contribution includes the value you're providing through vehicle use.
Since the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, only active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces who move due to a military order can deduct moving expenses. The previous deduction for job-related moves for civilians was suspended through 2025.
