Track your car's gas mileage to understand its fuel efficiency and costs. Our calculator works with US units (MPG), metric units (km/L), or European standard (L/100km). Calculate trip costs, compare to vehicle averages, and estimate your annual fuel expenses.
Fuel efficiency can be expressed as MPG (miles per gallon), km/L (kilometers per liter), or L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers). Higher MPG or km/L means better efficiency. Lower L/100km means better efficiency. Our calculator converts between all formats for easy comparison.
Fuel Efficiency Formula
MPG = Distance ÷ Fuel UsedCalculate fuel costs for road trips and plan your travel budget.
Track MPG over time to catch maintenance issues early.
Monitor monthly and annual fuel spending for budgeting.
Compare fuel efficiency between vehicles when car shopping.
It depends on vehicle type. Hybrids: 45-55 MPG. Compact cars: 30-35 MPG. Midsize sedans: 25-30 MPG. SUVs: 20-25 MPG. Trucks: 18-22 MPG. Compare to your vehicle's EPA rating for a better benchmark.
EPA ratings are measured in controlled conditions. Real-world factors that reduce mileage include: city vs highway driving, aggressive acceleration, cold weather, air conditioning, low tire pressure, and extra weight.
The formula is: L/100km = 235.215 ÷ MPG. For example, 30 MPG = 7.84 L/100km. Our calculator does this conversion automatically.
UK gallons are larger than US gallons (4.55L vs 3.79L). The same vehicle gets higher UK MPG numbers. To convert: UK MPG = US MPG × 1.2. Our calculator shows both.
Maintain proper tire pressure, remove excess weight, avoid aggressive driving, use cruise control on highways, reduce idling, keep up with maintenance, and combine short trips.
