How Cake Pan Calculations Work

Cake pan calculations are based on volume. A 9-inch round pan 2 inches deep holds about 127 cubic inches (its top surface measures about 63 square inches). By calculating pan volume and scaling a standard recipe, you can determine exact ingredient amounts for any size cake. This is the pan-volume method (V = πr²h), filling pans about two-thirds full; standard pan-capacity charts from references like Wilton and King Arthur Baking give the same batter volumes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the inside diameter for round pans, or the inside length/width for rectangular pans. Measure from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge.

Standard cake layers are 2 inches tall and pans are filled about two-thirds full. For a 9-inch round, that works out to roughly 5 cups of batter per layer. Our calculator adjusts this based on your specific pan.

Yes! A round pan and square pan with similar dimensions hold different volumes. A 9-inch round holds about 25% less than a 9-inch square. Our calculator handles these conversions.

Yes. A wider, shallower pan bakes faster and a deeper one slower. Keep the oven temperature the same, but start checking 5–10 minutes earlier for a larger pan and test with a skewer rather than trusting the original time.
