Choose the Wingdings → Text direction, pick the font the symbols came from, and paste them in. If nothing converts, the symbols are probably from a different one of the four fonts — the same picture rarely sits on the same key twice.

Wingdings is a font, not an encoding. Text formatted with it is still ordinary letters underneath, so copying it gives you letters, not symbols. There is nothing to decode — change the font back to a normal one. The page says so when it sees plain text in decode mode.

Wingdings 1 holds the classic set: hands, faces, weather, zodiac signs, religious symbols and office icons. Wingdings 2 is checkmarks, ballot boxes, circled numbers and pointing hands. Wingdings 3 is almost entirely arrows, triangles and keyboard key-cap marks. They share keyboard positions but no pictures.

Wingdings was designed by Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow in 1990 and 1991, originally as Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars, and released by Microsoft in 1992. Webdings came in 1997 from Vincent Connare and Monotype, aimed at web designers who wanted graphics without image files. Wingdings leans on hands, faces and office objects; Webdings on buildings, transport, media controls and interface marks.

Many Wingdings glyphs were added to Unicode alongside emoji and share a code point with them, so a browser draws them from the colour emoji font. The characters are correct — that is why they paste anywhere — but they are not the monochrome shapes the font draws. When the font is installed, the preview line below the output shows the real thing.

A box means the device has no font containing that character. Many of these symbols were only added to Unicode in 2014, and a stock system often covers well under half of them — on a current Mac, 167 of the 376 draw as boxes. Pasted Wingdings text fails on every character without the font, so Unicode is still the safer form, but neither is universal. The In font column shows what the installed font draws, which is why it sits beside the Unicode one.

W.D. Gaster is a hidden character in the game Undertale whose initials come from the fonts Wingdings and Aster, and whose dialogue is set in Wingdings. Fans write it in capitals, so type in uppercase with Wingdings 1 selected to reproduce the look — the Secret message preset does exactly that.

Select the text and change the font to Wingdings, Wingdings 2 or Wingdings 3, or use Insert > Symbol and choose the font there. The catch is that the letters underneath stay ordinary, so anyone without the font sees plain text. Pasting the Unicode output from this page avoids that.

A few Wingdings 2 glyphs exist in a regular and a bold weight that Unicode stores as a single character — the ballot box with an X is both S and T, and the circled reverse solidus is both W and X. Decoding cannot tell them apart, so the page picks one and tells you what the alternative was.

The symbols on this page are the Unicode equivalents of the glyphs in the Microsoft fonts, key by key, for all 95 printable positions in each of the four fonts. Where Unicode has no exact match the closest standard character is used, which is why a few shapes differ slightly from the font's own drawing.
