Scientific Notation Calculator - Convert & Calculate

Convert numbers to and from scientific notation instantly. Perform arithmetic operations on numbers in scientific notation with step-by-step solutions. Perfect for science, engineering, and mathematics.

What is Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation expresses numbers as a coefficient times a power of 10 (a x 10^n). The coefficient is between 1 and 10. For example, 15,000,000 = 1.5 x 10^7 and 0.00025 = 2.5 x 10^-4. This makes very large or small numbers easier to read and work with.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can enter numbers like 1.5e10 or 1.5E10 (meaning 1.5 × 10^10). You can also enter standard numbers like 15000000000.

Engineering notation is similar to scientific notation but the exponent is always a multiple of 3 (matching metric prefixes like kilo, mega, giga). For example, 15,000 = 15 × 10^3 in engineering notation.

Multiply the coefficients and add the exponents: (a × 10^m) × (b × 10^n) = (a×b) × 10^(m+n). For example, (2 × 10^3) × (3 × 10^4) = 6 × 10^7.

To add or subtract, both numbers must share the same exponent (power of 10). Rewrite one number so its exponent matches the other, then add or subtract the coefficients and keep the common power of 10. For example, 1.5 x 10^6 + 2.5 x 10^6 = 4.0 x 10^6. This calculator handles the rewriting automatically.
