How to Calculate Your USMC PFT Score

The USMC Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is the Marine Corps standard for measuring physical readiness. It consists of three events: an upper body event (pull-ups or push-ups), a core event (crunches or plank), and a 3-mile run. Each event is scored 0-100 points based on age and gender tables for a maximum of 300 (or 270 with push-ups). Our calculator applies the official MCO 6100.13A scoring tables so you can instantly see your total score, PFT class, and event-by-event breakdown.

What Is the USMC PFT?

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is the United States Marine Corps assessment of a Marine's physical conditioning. Per Marine Corps Order (MCO) 6100.13A with Change 3 and MARADMIN 330/19, Marines take the PFT semi-annually. The three events test upper body strength, core endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Pull-ups earn up to 100 points while push-ups are capped at 70, making pull-ups the higher-scoring option. Crunches and plank both earn up to 100. The 3-mile run also earns up to 100 points. Marines are assigned a class based on their total score: 1st Class (235+), 2nd Class (200-234), or 3rd Class (150-199).

Scoring Formula

Total Score = Upper Body (0-100) + Core (0-100) + 3-Mile Run (0-100), max 300

Frequently Asked Questions

A 1st Class PFT score of 235+ out of 300 is considered good. Scores above 270 are excellent. A perfect 300 requires maxing all three events with pull-ups (not push-ups).

You need at least 150 total points for a 3rd Class pass. Additionally, you must score above 0 on every event. Scoring 0 on any single event is an automatic failure.

The Marine Corps caps push-up scores at 70 to incentivize pull-ups, which are considered a better measure of upper body strength. This means the maximum total with push-ups is 270 instead of 300.

Yes. Plank scoring is age-neutral and gender-neutral. All Marines use the same plank table: minimum passing is 1:03 (40 points) and maximum is 3:45 (100 points).

1st Class: 235+ points, 2nd Class: 200-234 points, 3rd Class: 150-199 points. Below 150 or scoring 0 on any event results in failure.

Marines take the PFT semi-annually (twice per year). The two test periods are typically October through March and April through September.

The PFT (Physical Fitness Test) measures general fitness with pull-ups, crunches/plank, and a 3-mile run. The CFT (Combat Fitness Test) measures combat readiness with a movement to contact, ammo can lift, and maneuver under fire.

The 3-mile run uses an inverted scale where faster times earn more points. Scoring varies by age and gender. For example, a 21-25 year old male earns 100 points at 18:00 and 40 points at 27:40.

Yes. Marines can choose pull-ups (max 100 pts) or push-ups (max 70 pts) for the upper body event. Similarly, they can choose crunches or plank for the core event.

Yes. PFT scores factor into composite scores used for promotion to Corporal and Sergeant. A 1st Class PFT score earns more promotion points than lower classes.
